Reading Music Notes

Music and song parts can be learnt by ear with careful listening and repetition, but more complex harmonies and rhythms can be learnt faster if you can read music notation. Music notes indicate the pitch ( high or low) level of the melody according to where they are placed on the 5-line staves ( bass or treble clefs). The length the note is held is indicated by the type of note used ( eg whole, half, quarter). Rhythms are made up of combinations of note values and rests ( silences).
